Since 1993, the Adopt a Family program has been transforming lives by connecting individuals, teams, companies, and organizations with families in need. This program ultimately bridges the gap between those facing hardships and those eager to make a meaningful impact.

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring a family, senior, or veteran who truly needs something special this holiday season!
Here’s How To Adopt:
- You can search through families here and select one by clicking the “Select this Profile” box at the top of the page.
- Please note: To finalize your selection, you will need to set up a Roonga account or log into your existing account.
- You will receive an email from Volunteers of America within 1-2 business days with the contact information for your chosen family. However, the family’s wish list is available immediately for you to print.
- Contact the family directly to arrange a drop-off date, time, and location or for more information about their wishlists. If you have difficulty reaching the family, call Adopt A Family at (248) 353-4862 or email aaf@voami.org.
- Please drop off gifts by December 21 directly to the family at their home or the agreed-upon location.
What should my donation include? To help make the holiday season special for everyone, we kindly encourage you to provide two clothing items for each child (such as a top and bottom, or a coat paired with a hat, scarf, or mittens), as well as two toys or gifts from their wishlist (valued at $20-25 each). Additionally, we ask that you include a gift card to help the family enjoy a holiday meal together.
If you are unable to deliver directly to adopted families who live within 20 miles of the Administrative Office, call Adopt A Family at (248) 353-4862 to schedule a drop-off date and time. There are limited slots available.

Due to an overwhelming response, Volunteers of America Michigan is no longer accepting Adopt-A-Family applications.
While we work tirelessly to help as many people as possible, the demand has surpassed our current capacity. We are now turning to the community for support and asking for more people than ever to become sponsors and adopt families who are in need. We hope to reopen applications with enough support and continue serving those seeking support.

Why am I not eligible if my zip code is outside the approved area?
To ensure all families have safe and accessible options for pick-ups or drop-offs, eligible applications must be within a 20-mile radius of our thrift store locations. This guideline helps us maintain a secure and convenient process for both families and donors.
How do drop-offs work?
Once your application is approved, coordinating drop-offs is a collaborative effort between you and the donor/recipient. You both have the flexibility to decide when, where, and how to meet, with the option to select the nearest VOAMI Thrift Store as a safe, third-party location for the exchange.
I applied but wasn’t chosen. Why?
We deeply wish we could guarantee that every family in need is chosen, the availability of support depends on the generosity of our donors. Think of us as a matchmaking service, connecting potential donors with families in a safe and supportive manner. As a third party, our role is to facilitate these connections, but we cannot ensure that every family will be matched. We appreciate your understanding and are grateful for your participation in the program.
What happens if my family is not chosen?
Although we cannot guarantee a match for every family, we are committed to doing our best to ensure everyone experiences some holiday joy. For those who complete their applications, we will provide some support, as resources allow, to help brighten your holiday season.
What documents are required? Can anyone apply?
The Adopt a Family program operates on an honor system, requiring only a driver’s license to verify your address. To ensure that help reaches those who need it most, we kindly ask that only those truly in need apply. This trust allows us to focus our resources on making a meaningful impact where it is most needed.
