You gave Eddie a community where he belongs.

Eddie was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York at age two, where he lived for 25 years before a short trip back to Puerto Rico turned into 33 years of building a life. In Puerto Rico, he worked for 23 years in the commercial business sector, then at a hardware store for a decade, all while raising six children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Later, Eddie moved to Michigan, where he worked for an animal rescue organization, delivering food to shelters across Detroit, Westland, and Rochester, until his contract ended at 63, leaving him uncertain about his next steps.
In 2019, Eddie learned about Volunteers of America Michigan and applied to live at McDonald Senior Apartments. Since becoming a resident six years ago, Eddie has found a true sense of belonging. “I love the people; we always help each other,” he shared.
True to his active nature, Eddie became the custodian for McDonald Apartments in 2023, a role where his bilingual skills in English and Spanish proved invaluable to the diverse community. Now, at 77 years old, Eddie continues to find purpose and joy in his work, taking long walks around the building and staying involved in his community.
“The community is very welcoming, and we all get along very well. I’d like to stay here for as long as I can,” Eddie said with a smile. Free from financial worries, Eddie treasures the peace and fulfillment he’s found at Volunteers of America Michigan’s senior housing.
Looking ahead, Eddie is excited to spend more time with his grandchildren and continue building connections within his cherished community—a place where he has truly found his home.
